Chattanooga Salvation Army Day Shelter Celebrates Mardi Bra!

According to a Huffington Post article, “homeless women typically know where to find a safe place to sleep or a hot meal to eat, but when it comes to taking care of their feminine hygiene needs, they often have nowhere to turn.”  The Salvation Army realizes that most shelters are typically run by men and the majority of guests are men.  Feminine hygiene items and bras are rarely donated because they are pricey and often forgotten.  This is very challenging for homeless women.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary became aware of this need and created the idea of a “Mardi Bra Party,” a party where bras, panties, and feminine hygiene items could be handed out the female homeless guests.  The Mardi Bra Party will be held on Mardi Gras, February 17, at 10:00 AM at The Salvation Army ReCreat Café, located at 800 McCallie Avenue.  To date, thirty homeless women have RSVP’d for the party.

“We are still collecting items for the party,” states Major Teresa Newsome, Associate Area Commander of the Greater Chattanooga Area.  “Even after the Mardi Bra Party we will continue to collect these items since they are needed year-round.”

If your church, business or school would like to do a donation drive, please contact Jennifer Fisher at 423-756-1023.  Monetary donations may be made online at, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or by mail to: The Salvation Army, 822 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN, 37403.  For more information contact Kimberly George at 423-756-1023 or by email to
