Southern Adventist University Partners with Salvation Army for “Street Store” Service Project on MLK Day
Southern Adventist University is hosting a “Street Store” in partnership with The Salvation Army on Monday, January 19, from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. The Chattanooga Street Store will take place on the sidewalk in front of The Salvation Army, located at 800 McCallie Avenue.
Street Stores are sidewalk pop-up shops that offers free clothing to the homeless, providing them with a dignified shopping experience as they try on and select their own garments with a ‘personal shopper.’ Approximately 50 Southern students, along with Salvation Army staff, will be volunteering at the event to assist with clothes and hand out free lunches for the “shoppers.”
The Need: Chattanooga Community Kitchen’s website states: “According to information gathered for the city’s Blueprint to End Chronic Homelessness, more than 4,094 individuals experience homelessness each year in Chattanooga, with over 1,000 homeless children in public schools. Each night, an estimated 400-500 individuals sleep outside or in shelters.
