Six Ways You Can Make a Difference This Holiday Season
The Christmas Season is rapidly approaching, and we need YOUR help to make this another successful Christmas. Last year was a busy year for us, and we expect this year to be even busier.
In 2012, we fed 428 people at our Thanksgiving Eve Festival; 555 Thanksgiving meals were delivered to the homebound; and 300 meals were served to the homeless on Christmas Eve. A “Merry Christmas” was provided for 7,365 Angels, which included 53,369 toys and gifts! We simply could not do this without you, our loyal friends. Please see below for ways that you can help this holiday season.
1) Adopt an Angel
Through The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, necessities and Christmas gifts are provided for disadvantaged children from infants to age 12 and for senior citizens who are 60 years and older. Each tree is adorned with angel tags containing an angel’s age, gender, clothing sizes and gift wishes.
Community members select an “angel”, purchase items for that child or senior based on the information on the tag, and then return the gifts to the store where the angel was chosen. You can adopt your angel at Hamilton Place, Northgate or Bradley Square Malls starting November 8.
2) Ring a Bell
Funds raised through The Salvation Army’s Red Kettles ensure that thousands of individuals and families enjoy the wonderful Christmas that they would not otherwise have. We provide food, clothing, other necessities, and, yes, toys for the children. Sign up individually or as a group. Various locations are available. Click here to sign up for a shift.
Fill a stocking for a senior or fill backpacks for homeless women and men in our community. Come by The Salvation Army located at 822 McCallie Avenue. Sign out as many stockings and backpacks that you can fill and bring them back filled with Christmas cheer to The Salvation Army by November 22.
4) Serve/Deliver a Holiday Meal
Volunteers are needed to assist with The Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving Eve Festival on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Volunteers will assist with setting up, preparation, serving and cleaning up after the meal. Click here to sign up.
